Family Getaways – 4 Tips for Summer Savings while Driving

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Traveling with the family for hours on end can be exciting if planned properly. Here are some quick tips for having fun and keeping safe during your summer outing:

CHILL OUT – There is always an argument over whether leaving using the air conditioner wastes gas versus leaving the window open. Professionals at Edmunds carried out tests with both scenarios and basically their solution is to do what is comfortable. Why add all that stress to the commute? If one person wants the window down, perhaps they can keep it half way and if one person wants the air condition by all means turn it on and point the vents towards them.

PACK IT IN OR NOT – Make sure you actually need all that equipment you are carrying in your vehicle before leaving home. It is stated that on average gas mileage can decrease 1 to 2% for every 100 pounds of weight.

EMERGENCY NUMBERS – Of course everyone should know their emergency number for their own country but what most of us sometimes forget to put into our phones or to keep in our vehicles is the number for our insurance companies. Documenting and filing a claim is just as important on getting you back onto your journey if it does come to an abrupt halt.

DO NOT DEPLOY THOSE AIRBAGS – Although never personally experienced, putting your feet up on the dashboard may be comfortable but it can cause serious harm if it deploys your air bag. Kids are typically the ones who might do this but it is a great reminder for adults also to be aware of the consequences.

Stay Connected when Away from the Office – 3 Tips to Still Being Relevant when away from work

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Remaining relevant in a workplace that does not currently have a positive mindset about employees working from home can be difficult but with any change, once presented to management properly with the positives and cost savings that can be provided to a company, more human resource departments are looking to expand on the idea of allowing employees to work from home even if one or two days per week.

Just because you have won the battle to work from home does not mean that it all ends there, you still have to push to be relevant and on the minds of your managers due to the lack of face to face interaction with your colleagues. Here are some tips to getting that done:

1) Best way of communicating to colleagues and the boss – Before setting up shop at home, discuss with the people back in the office what is the easiest way for them to keep in touch. Some prefer the telephone, others email or instant messaging and honestly some will only prefer face to face meetings. For the face to face meetings, find out if video conferencing is an acceptable substitute. The point is that you have to make it easy for people to want to communicate with you and share information. Unfortunately, if you are not comfortable with all these forms of communication, it is best to spend time learning these technologies before pushing to work from home.

2) Take the reins in setting goals and meeting deadlines – Your colleagues might believe that because you are away from the office that you might not be as serious as prioritizing the company’s work and meeting deadlines. Instead, do the exact opposite, make sure that you are even more deadline oriented and are the one pushing your colleagues to meet various goals. They will see that although you are not physically present your presence is still definitely felt.

3) Go to the office at least a couple times a week – True, this goes against the decision of working from home but no one says that you have to work from home every day of the week. Drop in the office, clear your desk of any papers that colleagues might have left, pass by the cubicles of your co-workers and see if they put up any new family photos or treats that they are sharing and genuinely stop and ask how their day is going.

There are many other ways to remaining relevant when away from the office and you have to tailor each for your office scenario but simply observe and adapt to suit each situation.

Work From Home Tips – 3 Essentials to Keep in Mind While Working from Home

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Many of us read in the news about how are jobs are being pushed overseas or our employers are downsizing and in some cases do not require employees to actually come into the office to do their job anymore. Not only does this help the employer cut costs but if you plan properly, it can be advantageous to the employee also. Here are three tips that you can try for yourself to see if you are the kind of person which is capable of effectively working from home:

1) Keep a To Do List whether using actual pen and paper, a personal digital assistant or for the more technological inclined maybe keep such items in the cloud using Microsoft Windows Live or Google Docs, you have to find what works for you because it can become very easy to lose focus when you do not have your colleagues around.

2) Use Mobile Broadband from any of your favorite cell phone carriers. Just because you are working from home or away from the office, does not mean that you have to be tied down to your cable connection all the day. Drop by your favorite coffee shop, spend time at the beach or even a park but please make sure that you are still doing the work you are being paid to do.

3) Plan your breaks and keep focused while away from work, similarly to how you would in the office. Work colleagues might pull you away from your desk, you might dip outside to enjoy the weather or even take a walk around the office building. Just because you are away from the office does not give you the excuse to become lazy and watch the television all day.

So remember, like any change to your routine it requires some planning and the willingness to make the change work for everyone involved.

A Reminder about the Dangers of Viruses, Trojans and Spyware

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Here is a simple reminder and introduction to the dangers of viruses, malware and trojans on your computer. Due to the covert nature of these types of software, a user typically should have a layered defense to help protect themselves from these kind of attacks. Basically you have to remember to keep up with your operating system patches and updates, keep all of your software updated and make sure to keep your copy of your antivirus or security software up to date in order to be one step ahead of the dangers on the Internet.

Spyware has become a generic term that also includes adware, malware and many trojans. Such programs usually have inter-related behavior and features and are commonly referred to as spyware. Most spyware can be broken up into two major groups which are adware and malware. All spyware are rogue software programs that typically install themselves without a user’s knowledge. You can get infected with spyware, malware and other malicious programs just by visiting a website. Many spyware experts have noted that no one anti-spyware product catches all malware and spyware. That’s why some spyware appears so invincible.

Malware and the people who write them typically focus on the most popular operating system, which is currently that of Microsoft’s Windows Operating System but even Apple’s Macintosh Operating System is susceptible to viruses these days. One of the first signs of malware is the slowing down and lack of responsiveness by your computer but do not become alarmed right away. Other reasons for computer sluggishness might be a hard drive that is starting to get full or you might need to run a disk de-fragmentation program.

Trojans take their name from the term ‘Trojan Horse’ which dates back to Greek history and the war between Troy and Sparta. It spreads itself by posing as legitimate software. The term Trojan has usually been used to refer to malware that performs unexpected or unauthorized actions. Their danger is in causing damage to networks by delivering other types of malware. The trojan malware can record web browser form data to capture online banking credentials and send the stolen data to the author of the program for example.

In conclusion, we have seen that malware is short for malicious software and a catch all phrase for viruses, worms, adware, spyware and trojans. Having said all of this however, hope is not lost. There are many trust worthy, reliable programs out there from various vendors such as Prevx, McAfee, Symantec and even Microsoft is pushing their own product.
